The Celebrating a World of Music themed parade will take its annual 5 1/2-mile stroll through Pasadena, California with floats and marching bands from across the country in tow.

The parade will be marshalled by multi-award-winning actor and singer Audra McDonald and feature performances by Michelle Williams, David Archulettaand Jordan Sparks.

The College Football Playoffs semi-finals are borrowing the grandest tradition in sports later that night as the scandal mired Michigan Wolverines take on the controversially included Alabama Crimson Tide.

Coming to you from Pasadena, California, talented multi-hyphenate Audra McDonald will serve as the Grand Marshal of the event, and David Archuleta, Rush Davis, Cassadee Pope, and Michelle Williams will kick off the fun with an electric opening musical performance.

In 1890, Valley Hunt Club members, led by Charles Frederick Holder, sponsored the first Tournament of Roses. The abundance of flowers, even in the midst of winter, prompted the club to add a parade before the competition, where entrants would decorate carriages with hundreds of colorful blooms.

In New York, people are buried in snow,' announced Professor Charles F. Holder at a Club meeting. 'Here our flowers are blooming and our oranges are about to bear. Let's hold a festival to tell the world about our paradise.'

More than a century later, the parade floats are a marvel of state of the art technology, all tucked away beneath flowers and other all-natural materials. Every New Year, visitors experience the beauty of the floral floats along with spirited marching bands and high-stepping equestrian units along the 5.5 mile route down Colorado Boulevard.

According to the parade rules, floats are only to be covered in all natural materials. While flowers, leaves and even live plants make up the majority of float decorations, over the years decorators have gotten creative with crushed nut shells, bark and plant seeds to add to their float decor.

In order to bring these incredible floats to life, volunteers gather in the weeks and days ahead of the parade to attach the flowers and other materials, carefully planning which things need to go on first so as to avoid them spoiling before the big day. That old expression that it takes a village really rings true when it comes to getting the floats ready to go.

The Rose Parade is made up of a combination of flower-covered floats, high school and college marching bands and equestrian units.

In 2024, some of the floats include the San Diego Zoo, Trader Joe's, Honda, The UPS Store and DIRECTV. There are also several floats from various cities around Los Angeles Counties and beyond, including the state of Louisiana.

Some of the marching bands performing in the parade include bands from across the nation, Costa Rica and Japan.

The equestrian teams feature groups from all over California, but there are also teams from Texas, Colorado and Florida. The Budweiser Clydesdales will be traveling to Pasadena from their home in St. Louis, Missouri.

An expected 800,000 spectators will flock to Pasadena, California, on Monday to watch floral floats, equestrian units and marching bands fill the streets during the 135th annual New Year’s Day tradition: the Rose Parade.

The Tony, Grammy and Emmy award-winning actress will serve as the parade’s grand marshal, an honorary position selected by the president of the Tournament of the Roses Association for their contributions to the parade’s theme.

Dozens of floral floats will participate in the Rose Parade, each competing to win awards based on their design, presentation and entertainment value. The award-winning floats will be announced on New Year’s Day prior to the Rose Parade.
